Chinch Bugs & Grubs

Chinch bugs and white grubs are two of the most destructive lawn pests in the Greater Toronto Area — often causing damage before you even realize it's happening.

At GREEN & BRIGHT SOLUTIONS, we offer professional, eco-friendly treatments that target both pests using biological methods — with no synthetic chemical insecticides. Our approach restores balance below the surface while protecting your family, pets, and pollinators.

Pest Identification — Know the Signs

Chinch Bugs

These tiny insects live in the thatch layer and feed by sucking sap from grass blades. Their toxins block water flow and cause dry, straw-like patches in sunny areas.

Key signs:

  • Irregular brown or yellow patches in hot, sunny spots
  • Grass doesn't improve with watering
  • Insects visible at the base of turf
  • Turf stays attached to the soil

White Grubs

These C-shaped larvae of beetles (European Chafer, Japanese Beetle) live in the soil and feed on turf roots, causing thinning, wilting, and brown patches as the grass loses its strength.

Key signs:

  • Turf lifts easily with no roots
  • Lawn feels spongy underfoot
  • Skunks, raccoons, or birds digging holes
  • Grubs visible beneath the surface

Safe, Effective Biological Control

Our granular biological treatment is made with the beneficial fungus Beauveria bassiana strain ANT-03. When pests contact the spores, the fungus germinates, grows inside the insect, and disrupts feeding — causing a gradual population decline without affecting beneficial insects.

  • Attaches to the insect's shell

The treatment adheres to the insect’s outer layer, beginning the natural control process upon contact.

  • Grows inside the body

Once attached, it develops internally, disrupting the pest’s normal functions from within.

  • Stops feeding

Infected pests stop feeding, leading to a gradual reduction in population over time.

  • No chemical residue

The process leaves no chemical buildup, ensuring a safe and residue-free environment.

Targeted Pest Effects

On Grubs:

  • Targets larvae of European Chafer, June Beetle, Japanese Beetle
  • Best applied when grubs are young and active near the surface

On Chinch Bugs:

  • Affects both nymphs and adults during peak summer
  • Reduces surface populations and protects lawn in sunny areas

Timing & Application Tips

Proper timing ensures maximum effectiveness from both biological solutions.

Best time to apply fungal-based treatment:

  • Grubs: August–September; spring preventive applications also possible
  • Chinch Bugs: Mid to late summer during visible damage phase
  • Ideal conditions: Moist soil between 15–25°C
  • Light watering after application helps spores move into the soil

If you're unsure which pest is present, we offer a free lawn inspection to confirm.

Nematodes & Our Lawn Checkup

Beneficial Nematodes (for grubs only). We also offer entomopathogenic nematodes — microscopic organisms that attack grub larvae directly.

  • Best used during late summer to early fall
  • Most effective in moist, shaded lawns
  • Perfect for natural or organic lawn care plans

Free Lawn Pest Inspection

If you're unsure what's causing the damage, we'll check for:

  • Active grubs or chinch bugs
  • Soil moisture and thatch levels
  • Signs of drought vs insect damage
